1:12 Dollhouse Scale Explained: A Beginner's Guide to Sizing Miniatures

What Does 1:12 Scale Mean?

1:12 is the most popular dollhouse scale, and the rule is simple: 1 inch in miniature equals 1 foot in real life. Everything is 12 times smaller than the real thing.

So a 6-foot sofa becomes a 6-inch miniature, and a 6-foot person becomes a 6-inch doll. Once that clicks, shopping for miniatures gets much easier. To find any miniature size, just divide the real size by 12.

Real Examples You Can Picture

Real-life item Real size 1:12 size
Person 6 ft 6 in
Interior door about 80 in tall about 6¾ in
Wardrobe 6–7 ft tall 6–7 in
Kitchen counter 36 in high 3 in
Dining table 30 in high 2½ in
Chair seat 18 in high 1½ in
Double bed 54 × 75 in 4½ × 6¼ in
Wall mirror 24 in tall 2 in

Watch Out: Not Every Miniature Is 1:12

The most common beginner mistake is mixing scales. Other popular scales include:

  • 1:24 (half scale): ½ inch = 1 foot. Everything is half the size of 1:12.
  • 1:48 (quarter scale): ¼ inch = 1 foot. Great for tiny room boxes.

A 1:24 chair will look like a toy in a 1:12 room, and a 1:12 teapot will look giant in a 1:24 kitchen. Always check the scale in the listing before you buy.

Measure Your Dollhouse Before You Shop

A ruler and a notepad are all you need:

  1. Room height: most 1:12 dollhouse rooms are about 8–10 inches tall. This tells you how tall wardrobes, shelves and lights can be.
  2. Floor space: measure the length and width of each room so you don't overcrowd it.
  3. Doors and windows: measure the openings so furniture can fit through and curtains or blinds fit the frame.

Small Details Need the Right Scale Too

Scale isn't only for furniture. Books, plates, candles, rugs, picture frames and food all need to match. If one small item is the wrong scale, the whole room can look "off", even if you can't tell why at first.

Tip: check the dimensions in every listing, then multiply by 12 to picture the real-life size. If a "book" works out to 2 feet tall in real life, it's probably the wrong scale.
